    If it didn’t pump all the time how would your car run? it has to keep a certain fuel PSI.

    all the time or it wouldnt run . it works on a relay system that switches it on and off as the fuel is needed. there is also a return to the tank for any unused fuel

    It runs the whole time the engine runs and uses a regulator to send fuel back to gas tank that the engine does not need.

    there are 2 kinds, mechanical (they are a diaphragm that is actuated by rotation of the engine) and electrical which is controlled by the cars 12 volt system (relays and sensors) they both pressurize the fuel to either your carb or injection system for constant supply when needed and when they are off will still maintain pressure (unless there is a leak)
